Brief History of the Missouri State Flag

The Missouri flag is one of the most recognizable state flags in the country. Its design is simple, yet elegant, and its meaning is deep. The flag has gone through several iterations over the years, each one reflecting the changing times and the evolving identity of Missouri. Here’s a look at the history of the Missouri flag.

The first official Missouri state flag was adopted in 1913. The design was simple, featuring a white field with a red border. In the center of the flag was a blue disk with the Missouri coat of arms emblazoned on it. This design served as the state flag for nearly 50 years.

In 1961, after much debate, a new state flag was unveiled. The design retained the red border and blue disk from the previous flag, but everything else was changed. The Missouri coat of arms was replaced with a circular version of the state seal, and two smaller blue disks were added on either side. This design is similar to the one that flies over Missouri today.

Over the years, the Missouri flag has come to symbolize not only the state itself, but also the progress that Missouri has made since becoming a state. The flag is a reminder of how far we have come and how much we have to be proud of. It is a symbol of hope for what lies ahead.

Flown proudly by Missourians for more than 100 years, the state flag is a symbol of our progress and pride. It is a reminder of where we have been and an emblem of hope for what lies ahead. Every time you see it flying, take a moment to reflect on all that Missouri has to offer.
