Brief History of the Washington State Flag
The Washington State flag is a simple yet elegant design. Featuring a deep green field with the state seal in the center, it is a symbol of pride for many Washingtonians. But where did this flag come from? Let’s take a brief look at the history of the Washington State flag.
The first iteration of the Washington State flag was designed in 1925 by Louise M. McDonald, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. It featured a green field with a gold stylized version of George Washington in the center. This flag was flown until 1927 when it was replaced by a new design that featured the state seal in the center instead of George Washington.
This new design, which is very similar to the current flag, was created by A.D. Macadam and Ethel Reed and was adopted by the legislature in 1927. The only major change to the flag since then has been the addition of the word “Washington” above the seal in 1959. Otherwise, this elegant and simple design has served as a symbol of our great state for over 90 years.
